I went through a minor upheaval this weekend over the decorating scheme of my bedroom. In my previous living situation, I had a studio, and here, although everything about the place and the space and the neighborhood is quite a bit a more lovely, I'm living in one room (not coincidentally the name of my favorite vintage decorating book). At least I have a tree in my room, although it does take up rather a lot of space.
I went through several phases of aesthetic desire on Saturday & Sunday: Modern, in subconscious Philip Johnson homage, I guess; then Gustavian, then some campy Bohemian thing ("More pillows, more blue glass!"). I have settled on some sort of turn of the century vibe, like the sort of house I imagine Peggy Guggenheim grew up in over on Fifth Avenue, which she describes a little in her memoir, Confessions of an Art Addict (I love DV too, but paint is not an option).
Although: I am going through a little Swedish phase, I think, and I would love to do my room in all white and blue, with lots of opaque glass and white wood furniture with lovely turned legs and details. I am always in love with that style, having had a great grandfather who was a Swedish cabinetmaker.
Also appealing for spring is perhaps just a shade of the beach house aesthetic -- white linen curtains, paired with some exquisite organic cotton sheets. I am also toying with the idea of making a canopy tent for my bed out of a parachute, as seen in the classic decorating book, Your Space, which could be accurately subtitled, "It's 1977: You better buy a SoHo loft while you still can."
